Caribbean Sport and Sustainable Development, in partnership with Kréyol Sports International, proudly presents the Memorial Day Cup 2025. This historic event, celebrating basketball and Creole culture, will promote cooperation, economic exchange, and cultural appreciation between West Africa and the French Antilles, uniting nations through sports and shared heritage. Join us in fostering peace and sustainable development in the Caribbean.
In September 2024, Bénin enacted a groundbreaking law enabling African descendants to acquire Beninese nationality. This initiative addresses historical wrongs stemming from slavery and provides a sense of identity for descendants worldwide. It aims to strengthen Bénin’s diplomatic and economic relations with its diaspora.
During his visit to Martinique in December 2023, Béninese President Patrice Talon underscored the importance of building relationships, stating, "There is much to do because nothing exists between us." This law underscores Bénin's commitment to fostering stronger ties and exchanges with Guadeloupe and Martinique.
1. Promote Peace, Memory, and Brotherhood: Through the Kreyol Memorial Day Cup, the NGO aims to contribute to early peace-building efforts, emphasizing memory and fraternity.
2. Foster Sportsmanship and Cultural Exchange: By leveraging sports, particularly basketball, the event will serve as a platform for cultural and athletic exchange.
3. Enhance Economic and Tourism Opportunities: The competition will include side events like an Africa-West Indies tourism expo and cultural and memorial tourism circuits for the Beninese delegation.
4. Strengthen International Relations:
The event is envisioned as a biennial occurrence, alternating between West Africa and the French Antilles, thereby solidifying long-term cooperation.
The Kreyol Memorial Day Cup acknowledges the deep historical and cultural connections between West Africa and the French Antilles. The Creole culture, a rich fusion of African, European, and indigenous influences, is celebrated across these regions.
